Airbnb will prohibit one-night rentals over Halloween weekend

During this season when Airbnb is trying to avoid big gatherings, as part of its ongoing effort to crack down on party houses, the company has blocked one night bookings during 2020 halloween weekend.

Airbnb has announced the prohibition on Friday, October 2, 2020, nearly a year after a deadly shooting at an Airbnb rental in northern California. This unfortunate event happened to have five people killed during an unauthorized Halloween party.

All listings in the U.S. and Canada will have one-night rentals banned on October 30 and October 31, the halloween weekend. Even previously booked one-night rentals will be canceled and the company will offer refunds.

"The great majority of guests are respectful of our hosts' homes and neighbors, and we understand that this initiative will disrupt many one-night reservations that might not have led to parties, this action is designed to help protect our hosts and the communities they live in."

The company's efforts have intensified as it prepares for an initial public stock offering, which could come later this year. Airbnb has been trying to shed its couch-surfing image and appeal to more types of travelers. Airbnb has taken steps to crack down on parties since last year's shooting. Last November, it started manually reviewing U.S. and Canadian reservations to weed out suspicious rentals.

HOW TO: Avoid having your listings blocked

Guests are still able to book more then one night during the weekend. Airbnb's website and app will simply disable functionalities, not allowing guests to book for one night. Though two or more nights are still okay.

If a host wants to keep his listings available, with no restrictins during that weekend. Simply setting your listings to more than one night bookings solves this blockage issue.
